outside

Yesterday was a day-long trip to the "big city" to do some shopping.  A few essentials (cat food, toothpaste, etc.), some craft/sewing/art supplies and some after Christmas bargains.

a shiny Christmas tree now on my antique sewing machine/dressing table

some shiny ornaments added to my glass jar on top of my desk

It's such a beautiful drive from here to there.  One of these days I will take some photographs en route, even if I have to pull over and take them from the side of the road.

Being gone most of the day yesterday, I didn't do much work on projects.  So instead of sharing progress, I'll show you some photos from a walk outside this morning and some from the other day, too.  I am constantly awed by how beautiful it is here.

One thing that I'm loving is all of the animal tracks everywhere.  They're like writing in a foreign language that I wish I could decipher.

something BIG

I keep hoping that all the tracks leading to our discarded pumpkins will reveal that someone's been enjoying winter sustenance from them.

But although I've seen these tiny (mouse?) tracks and also clear deer tracks, the pumpkins remain intact.  I think they've been frozen too solidly to be munchable.

I also still love the barn on the other side of our property edge.  It was once the barn that went with this farmhouse, but the farm was separated into parts and the part we bought no longer included the barn.  This fall it was partially dismantled in order to reclaim the lumber for building a winery.

The men who pulled it down said they saw a small black bear behind it while they were working and guessed it was living in the barn.  I've seen no sign of the bear and although I've seen large footprints from some sort of toed/pawed mammal, none of them lead in or out of the barn itself.  Maybe the bear is in there and hibernating?  There really isn't that much shelter in the ruins, though.  I both wish to see and am a bit afraid of running into the bear.  My curiosity is greater than my fear, so I keep looking.

  4. Gorgeous photos. You live in a beautiful place that I imagine is full of inspiration (it is inspirational even from here in Cornwall sitting at my computer viewing your photos). Your decision to move there and follow your dreams is also a story that inspires me. So thank you for sharing all of it.

BTW out of interest - what camera do you use?

  5. Thanks, Kat. I love that through blogs we can reach around the globe!

I use a Cannon 50D for most of my photography, but I also still use my little Powershot when I'm out and about and don't want to lug around my "big" camera. I'm still learning how to use the 50D (I got it this summer), partly because I don't like reading instruction books (I'd rather just take photos!).
