Paint Party Friday!
It wasn't a great painting week for me, but I was busy with other things and didn't do as much painting as I might have done otherwise. I did manage to finish up my journal page:
I finished the daffodil, added the raindrops, finished painting the text and used a pen to add more text. I had so much fun painting the color dots last week that I thought I'd include swatches of colors I used on the edge of my page. I think I'll do that on each page from now on. I'm happy with how it turned out. I started sketching another page, but was having trouble with my sketching.
I played around with color dots more this week, too. Just using up some leftover paint. By the bottom of the page I'd run out entirely. I thought that text would be a nice addition to the blank space, so yesterday I added some.
I really want to play around with more painted text. I've long admired the painted text in the book In and Out of the Garden by Sara Midda. It's funny because I don't have the nicest handwriting, but that doesn't seem to bother me. I enjoyed making the colors flow in the text on my journal page, but had less success with that on this blue painting. I'll keep working on it.
I also worked some more on my peppermint geranium painting. I added the stems, flower buds and a crinkled brown leaf. I'd been thinking about how I wanted to paint the flowerpot and decided that I wanted to do some more experimenting with masking fluid. I've only used it to mask out leaf veins so I wanted to see how it would work masking areas that had already been painted. In some ways it worked well, but on a couple areas painting the masking fluid removed the paint.
This is especially apparent on the leaf near the bottom of the pot. It had been a nice, dark green. The whole point was experimenting and practice, so I can't be too upset. I still need to paint the flowers and I should do some touch up. In some ways I'd prefer to move on to other things, but the practice would be helpful and who knows, with a little more work I might end up really liking this painting. I really like how a couple of the leaves turned out. They have the velvety look that the real plant's leaves have. Perhaps, eventually, I'll be able to make the paint do what I want on purpose instead of just by accident.

These are wonderful. The April page is fantastic. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe journal pages are lovely, the dots along the side are a cool addition. They remind me of the color code along the edge of some fabrics.
ReplyDeletePretty geranium.
I love both your beautiful watercolors. They are so clean and simple, just gorgeous. This is a style I really adore and wish I could paint like that.
ReplyDeleteeverything looks wonderful. I love your clean style, it is fresh. I also love your dots, a wonderful way to use up left over paint creating a layer perhaps for another piece.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous journal pages, Anne! LOVE the way you are doing the dots... And your geranium painting is coming along beautifully! LOVING those leaves! :)
ReplyDeleteAs usual, your determination to improve your skill is shown in your work. Well Done and you're doing great! ;)
ReplyDeleteAnne: Love your PPF post! I so want to create a masterpiece EVERY time and some times they are definitely learning experiences :) YOU'RE in Cleveland??? My SIL is in Massolin, been there to visit a couple times! LOVE your journal pages - the blue dots and blue words. I love words and haven't seemed to perfect my painted words technique ... off to visit your Etsy shop!
ReplyDeleteI like the dots too! That is a very neat trademark way to add to your art! :-)
ReplyDeleteWow to say you didn't do much painting you sure have wonderful things to show, these are great... it's my first time at Paint Party Friday & I've had a ball!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it fun when something like a simple dot can lead you into a whole other direction? Love your journal page and your geranium painting is looking great! Happy PPF :-)
ReplyDeleteAren't you loving PPF? It keeps us working and learning. I love how you talking about things you are learning along the way. As someone who is learning, too I appreciate the information :)
ReplyDeleteI love your geranium! I'm kinda partial to geraniums. And what a great idea on the color swatch dots. I enjoyed painting my letters on my sign just as you are liking your painted letters, they just look so authentic and not like a font which is almost all we see now. I love the originality of it. Hand lettering is pretty much a lost art since the invention of vinyl lettering being laser cut.
Happy PPF, late. Hope your weekend is fun :)
xxoo,
Jaime
I am a big fan of your colorful dots - I think they're a great addition to your page!
ReplyDeleteWhether by accident or on purpose, I am enjoying your beautiful watercolors :)

ReplyDeleteI love April showers and it's golden daffodils and you have given it your special loving painterly ode in this beautiful journal page. Gorgeous work!
ReplyDeletePretty, I like your journal page! and the dots! The geranium is coming along nicely!
ReplyDeleteI really love your sketchbook work, and yes I can see how you'd like to play around with words in your work. Great fun, and those dots are still so NEAT! I ran out of time in my art class this week, but we'll definitely be doing them next week!
ReplyDeleteI love your journal page; so pretty and full of interest. And I like the effect of the page of dots with words. Funnily enough I'm also trying to experiment with words in my art as its something I've wanted to include for a long time but have lacked the skill. I think your writing looks lovely - very artistic and creative! Your peppermint geranium is coming along well, keep with it and I'm sure it will turn out something you'll be very proud of.

Love your journal and your geranium. I tell people everything I do is an experiment. They look at me funny! Happy PPF
