painting a day -- day 5

Still going. Today I wrote in my journal and did some drawing in my sketchbook. In theory, I want to do both of those things every day. In reality, it hasn't been happening that way.

Just sat at the kitchen island and sketched my flowers. I experimented using different types of pencils in one drawing in order to achieve lights and darks.

I was also trying to work somewhat quickly because I don't want to spend hours and hours on each page of my sketchbook.

I painted with acrylics today. First I tried to define the hobnail texture on the vase from the other day's painting.

Still not entirely right. Which shouldn't matter, but it does bother me a little. I also painted a simple plaid-like, quilt-like pattern as today's painting.

And using the leftover paint from these two paintings, I added more layers to the circle painting (see other versions here, here and here).

Feeling a bit inept with the acrylics. And I don't really like painting with them on those small squares of paper/canvas. I don't want to give up altogether, but maybe I should just focus on the watercolors. My stubborn nature, though, is telling me to keep going with acrylics. I guess we'll see how things go.

  3. I love the stuff you're creating! That first sketch reminds me of the kind of sketches I used to do but I just don't have enough hours in my day now!

  4. Hi Anne.
I understand your frustration with the acrylics. I was just thinking yesterday how much easier the paint flows with watercolor and oils. I think you are doing great though. I like your textures. Do you use any mediums with your acrylics? And I love that you are sketching in you sketchbook...even if you have just 5 minutes you can draw something! Even a doodle. I have been carrying around a small book lately to my kids baseball games and have been jotting down ideas and trying to sketch people quickly.

  5. I haven't tried acrylics but I am looking forward to try it. I think there are fluid acrylics which are watery but not sure what brand is that. I like your painting of the pattern with colors. very simple but cool to the eyes. Just keep going no matter what, Anne. Lovely flower sketch!

  7. Your drawings of the columbine are terrific! And the circle painting is looking good too.

  8. I think acrylics are tough because you can't make the color move like watercolor. However I recently bought some liquid acrylic artist's ink. Haven't tried them yet. Your color and texture are great. Don't give up yet!

  9. i love this circle painting!! Don't quit just yet with the acrylics... it takes a little while to get comfortable with it. You're on the right path. And remember, you can put as much (or little) water as you want, so if you tend to be more comfortable with watercolors, just use more water until you get more comfortable with the texture and consistency. I really do love the circle painting... great colors. xoxo

  10. Thanks for all the encouragement!

I don't use any kind of medium with my acrylics and I have trouble with the adding water, but I think I'm going to experiment in future and see what happens!
