2x2: 2 Artists, 2 Sketchbooks -- Week 52

Week 52! Dana and I have been sharing pages from our sketchbooks for 1 year now. Hard to believe it's been a year already.

I had a few ideas for my page to accompany Dana's drawings of vases but finally settled on creating a blue background (to pull out the blue from Dana's page) and sketching white milk glass vases, inspired by my small collection.

I started with a blue Copic marker, but soon realized that even these thick multi-media pages didn't keep it from bleeding through (I felt so bad about damaging Dana's drawing on the other side). I switched to acrylic paint and after it dried I sketched my vases using oil pastels.

I'm not very fond of oil pastels (too many messy little bits), but they gave a nice effect here, especially once I scratched in the details using a toothpick.

I think something similar would make for a fun fabric design.

Don't forget to visit Dana's blog for her take on this week's pages!

And be sure to check back on Friday when Dana and I will be sharing our thoughts about reaching the year mark. We'll also be sharing an exciting announcement!

About the project:

2x2: 2 Artists, 2 Sketchbooks is a collaboration between artists Dana Barbieri and Anne Butera. Dana and Anne met in an online painting class. Although they have never met in person, they have become friends through regular visits to each others' blogs. It was through this connection that this project began. Wanting to move from friendship to collaboration, each spent two months filling one half of a sketchbook before mailing it off to the other. Dana worked on the lefthand pages and Anne on the right. Each will be responding to the other's work on the adjacent sketchbook pages over the coming year. Watch weekly as they reveal another page of their story.

About the artists:

Dana is an artist and crafter living in the foothills of the Catskill mountains two hours north of New York City with her husband, two children and little kitty. She is passionate about painting, knitting, crochet, color, pattern and design.

Anne is an artist, writer and crafter who finds inspiration and joy in the beauty of her garden and the magic of nature. Dissatisfied with and disheartened by the pace and lifestyle of the city, she and her husband (with their two rescued greyhounds and an aging Siamese) relocated to a small town in the beautiful Driftless region in southwest Wisconsin with the goal of living a slower, simpler, more intentional life.

  1. I like the restricted colour palette as it allows the eye to concentrate on the shapes. Thank you for sharing a years worth of 2 artists, 2 sketch books. It has been fun seeing how you both progress and interact with each others pages. :-)

    1. Hi, Simone.

Although I love color, sometimes a simplified palette is much more dramatic and effective. I like things both ways, minimal and maximal!

Thank you for following along on our project this past year! It's been delightful to share our pages and have you cheering us on!

  2. Your 2 x 2 project is so inspiring! Its interesting to see how you both play off each other's colors and subjects, sometimes corollary and other times contrasting. It must give you so much satisfaction to see the book as a whole. Well done!

    1. Thank you, Sharon! It's always so much fun to come up with something to go with Dana's pages. And yes, it's lovely to see the book as a whole. It will also be fun to get my original book back from Dana and see all her pages in person!
