after the snow

After yesterday's storm we woke up to snow, snow, snow!  I love snow.  I really do.  There's something exciting about waking up to this:

There was so much wind during the storm that it formed huge drifts.  We spent most of the day digging ourselves out and were so thankful that a neighbor plowed our drive for us just because he hated to think of us being snowed in.  Yet more proof of the goodness of the people around here.  Even so, it was a lot of work and we are tired.

Although it was cold (with a low windchill) the sky cleared and the day was very sunny, making working outside not so bad.  The really deep snow took a lot of effort, but it was very satisfying.

Yes, that's up to the middle of my thigh.  Some areas it's even deeper.  I really want to tromp around through the snow to take more pictures, but I might not be able to make it through some of those drifts.  Guess I really will need to learn how to snowshoe!

Here are a few more views:

Eloise is surrounded, but amazingly all of her hair, her face and her arms are still attached.  How that happened when the wind was so strong, I have no idea, not when the cushion on the bench on the front porch (which was tied to the bench, by the way) disappeared during the storm.  And she's in a spot where the snow really blew, too!

The birds have a quite a slope below their feeders, but seem not to mind the snow at all.

If you look carefully at this next one you can see the deep drift by the fence.

So pretty.  Of course, if we had lost power during the storm or if our neighbor hadn't plowed our driveway or we had places we needed to be, the snow wouldn't be quite so fun, but those things didn't happen.  We worked hard and it was tiring, but those things do not diminish the beauty of it all.

  1. I agree, when it's not TOO inconvenient, snow is extremely beautiful.
Your yard, with the picket fence, arched gate and lovely house, looks like something out of a Hallmark movie! Glad you got help with the plowing! The twilight pictures are especially beautiful!

  5. I saw the news about the heavy snow on tv and thought that must have been tough.

I'm glad that you don't have so much difficulties.
Love your photos here. Look peaceful and beautiful :-)

  6. Hope all of you who are experiencing snow are managing to keep warm!

    Thanks for your comments.

And yes, I feel so lucky to have been able to enjoy the snow without difficulty and so fortunate to be living where it is so beautiful and peaceful and to be really enjoying it.

  7. Wow - we've had some snow but nothing like this. Gorgeous photos - in some the snow looks liked whipped cream or egg whites the way its drifted and peaked. And your house and surrounding land is stunning - it looks like a wonderful magical place to live. It looks like a place I'd dream of!

Keep warm and enjoy. The UK is chaos in parts with the snow & ice. It seems you're more organised where you are.

  8. Maybe they're just more used to the snow here. This is my first winter in Wisconsin, so I don't know if this is typical or not, but in other places I've lived snow doesn't seem to affect things much. The plows come through and it's no big deal. I always want snow to be a Big Deal, though. It is really beautiful.

Sometimes I can't believe that I'm living in such a magical place.

    Thanks for all the comments!
