30 day blog love affair, day 17

"If I had my life to live over again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once every week."

                          --Charles Darwin

I know I don't do as much of either as I'd like to. But why not? Because I haven't made them mandatory? Every April for National Poetry Month I plan to read and write poetry every day. Somehow it never works that way. A couple weeks ago I gathered up some poetry books and ate my lunch with them.

I'm sad to say that it was a one-time occurrence.

I have other "rules" I should make for myself, too. Things like:

  • sketch in my sketchbook
  • meditate
  • read
  • write letters
  • write poetry
  • write stories
  • stargaze
  • give myself facials
  • sit quietly with my kitty on my lap while doing nothing else
  • exercise and stretch
  • go out with friends
I'm sure there's more. Sometimes I wonder if I should have some sort of schedule for all the things that are important but that so easily get put off or forgotten. How can I make sure that I get around to it all?

What about you? What rules would you want to make for yourself?

  1. I'm right there with you, Anne. The number one rule I struggle with is flossing my teeth. I know I should do it every day, but I don't. Crikey!

  2. I like the kitty one. I'd choose that except my cat does not think my lap is worthy of her (while husband's lap is her cuddling location of choice - cruel world).

  3. i was thinking about this myself recently. I just don;t find the time to do all that I want to or should do - i was even considering giving up tv!! radical! i've tried this week to slip things in like 30 mins of gardening at lunchtime and waking up earlier to read. I dunno - its all a life in progress i guess! :)

  4. I think you can do it all just maybe not all at once.

  5. A friend of mine has an app on her smartphone that is a very soft chime that goes off periodically as a "mindfulness" reminder. If I had such a phone I would get it and, every time it went off, I'd stop and take a few minutes to meditate. Meanwhile, I'm promising myself some time each day to sit on my porch, read, sketch or meditate.
