the art of enjoying a beautiful day

When I decided to come to Cleveland for the month of November to spend time with my husband, I decided to be a bit flexible about the "everyday" part of Art Every Day.  (Although photography and blog posting is creative, right?).  Matthias has the day off today, so the plan was just to enjoy the day and each others' company.  It's been lovely.

Walks.  Yummy food.  Togetherness.  We even went thrifting.  50% off on Mondays!!  For less than $20 I snagged 6 sweaters for me (partly because I've been inspired by the refashions at ayenforcraft and partly because I need layers, it's cold!!), a pair of jeans for him, an orange Fiesta bowl (with a small chip, but hey) and a milkglass sugar bowl.

I'm always on the lookout for pretty pieces to stow tools and supplies and this one will be a perfect addition.

The snow is melting, but it's still very much here.  What's funny is that it seems to be very localized.  A mile or two west of here there is no snow.  Oh, and the roses, despite the snow, look ok.

Yesterday I made some soup.  I have such trouble finding recipes to make.  The problem usually is that I don't have the right ingredients.  But also, it's the fact that I have a very clear idea of what I want to make and I can't find a recipe that corresponds to what's in my head.  So, with the constraints of what happened to be in the house (and a clear picture in my head) I made up a mushroom soup recipe.  Turned out pretty good, too.  While waiting for the soup to be done and then eating it with a glass of cheap wine, I wrote up the recipe in my sketchbook, doodled a bit and penciled a list of the random music that came on my iPod.  A fun way to spend an evening alone.

Home Alone Mushroom Soup:
olive oil
butter
1 large yellow onion, chopped
4 stalks celery, chopped
2 cups broth (I used chicken bouillon)
2+ cups milk
1 1/2 cups frozen corn
1 1/2 TB cornstarch dissolved in a little cold water
9 large white mushrooms, thinly sliced
celery salt, pepper, parsley
  • Melt butter in olive oil in large pot
  • Saute onions and celery until onions are soft and golden.  Add celery salt.
  • Add broth, corn and milk.  Heat to just before boiling.
  • Add cornstarch and water and bring to boil.  Boil for about a minute.
  • Add mushrooms, pepper and parsley.  Reduce heat and cook till mushrooms are done.

Tomorrow I'll tackle more of my arty to-dos.

  8. Cool idea about making the recipes into a zine. It would be fun to include recipes that aren't really recipes. Like on those days when dinner is a few slices of cheese, some olives, a pickle and some crackers. And include specially chosen musical selections, like how specific wines are paired with meals.
