inspiration

Remember my pile of new books?

I've been working through them a little bit here and there, savoring, but not spending a lot of time with them.  I've been following my creative leanings instead of directing them with books or exercises.

But then I picked up Katherine Dunn's book.

I like that she describes it as not quite being a how-to book.  I guess even how-to books I approach with something other than a desire to follow step by step instructions (do I ever like following instructions?).  But this book has been inspiring to me.  I love Katherine's images, for one thing, but also her discussion of techniques and materials are opening my mind up to possibilities.  All that wood from the ruined barn?

Perfect material for painting.  I can't wait to try some other things she mentions, like using oil pastels with acrylic paint.  And I have other ideas percolating, too.  Don't you love how that happens?  Gleaning bits and pieces of inspiration here and there.

Another bit of inspiration just arrived in my inbox today.  Kat's first TIC TOCC Newsletter!

And although plenty of inspiration can be found on the Internet, I need to get off my computer now.  I have too many things I want to work on today and I'm sure you'll all agree that a minute on the computer can easily turn into an hour.

  1. I hear you on the time warp thing. ;)
WHen you say oil pastels, do you mean the crayon looking ones? Tati had a box of those (birthday present) which she is willing to share. Looking forward to what you do with them!!!

  2. Yep, that's them. I've never had much luck working with them by themselves, so we'll see how they do in my paintings. I'm working on a few this week, but none are to the point that I am ready to try the pastels.
