Paint Party Friday!

It didn't rain yesterday and by the afternoon we were able to get out and work in the garden.  It was wonderful to be back in my garden and I kept fantasizing about someone falling in love with it and wanting to buy our house because of it.

Today, though, it's raining again.  Which I guess is ok because I got to spend the day painting without feeling like I should be outside instead.

I have to say that the daffodils turned out to be as difficult to paint as I thought they'd be.

On Wednesday when I started them, they seemed to be starting out ok.  But then I became less and less happy with them.

Needing a break from flowers and frustrated with how the bottle in the one painting turned out, I used up some more of the mixed paint to practice painting glass.

And then I decided that I needed a paint project that would just be fun, so I painted some circles and played with color mixing.

It was fun to do and the result makes me happy, too.

I didn't feel up to attempting the fuchsia today.  Instead I started a painting of my peppermint geranium.

It got a bit huge and is full of flowers, thanks to Matthias' TLC.  I carefully edited the plant in my sketch (I usually make my plants simpler than they are in real life).

Finally, I started a page in my new journal.  I've been wanting to keep a sketchbook journal forever, but was kind of intimidated to begin.

I like how my rose branch is turning out.

I used one of my cuttings as a model (I hope to plant these up and get them rooting).

I guess that's how things go.  Some days are good.  Some days are less good.  Some paintings work, some don't work as well.

One thing that did make me happy, today, is the fact that I was able to get some tickets to see The Decemberists this summer.  Matthias and I are going to meet up in Chicago in July for the concert.  I'm really excited.

  1. fun to see all the pieces you have been working on. When something is challenging I always like doing something that I am pretty sure I can be somewhat mindless about. I like each piece for different reasons. Your circles are fun indeed.

  12. I'm not sure what you aren't happy with here, everything is magical, beautiful and calling me to your garden. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if you mentioned next week someone came calling to buy your home just because your garden enchanted them.My favourite....the April Sketch Book....adore the writing, and color, the rose branch in it's perfect form and the daffodil....very whimsical and quite romantic......Recalls work of Edith Holden.

    Happy Easter : )

  13. These are all beautiful. Just beautiful. So lovely and soft. You really did a great job on the daffodils, even if you don't like them!

  14. I think your flower paintings are great! Your drawings are certainly well done. Maybe try using a little less water on your paper. Let it dry down a bit more before you add the paint. Watercolor is a tricky medium, but you are doing a fabulous job. Your work is as delicate and beautiful as your flowers. Your home is beautiful too. Love the green wall in the background. Please show us your garden one of these days. Happy Easter! :-)

  16. I love all these pieces you've shared with us, but if I had to choose a favorite; I'd choose the daffodils- they are wonderful! I love the variety of colors you depicted and the glass is good too. Maybe you should put it away for a couple of days and see if you like it better then....I know *I* love it!
Oh and your circles have inspired an art project with my little 6 and 7 year old students for next week :) so THANK YOU!
Happy PPF (a day late ;))

  17. I like your daffodils too! I know how frustrating it is when things don't turn out like they do in your head. That is the story of my life. I actually like the brown vase that it changed into. I love the color combination of the yellows and oranges with the browns... so earthy. I love your blog, it includes my 2 favorite things, gardening and creating.

  18. I think that the daffodils are just lovely! I find that painting flowers is challenging. It takes me forever; I can't do it in one sitting and dash them off. Keep at it!
Thanks for commenting on my eggs. They were not easy.

  19. WOW you are becoming a painting butterfly emerging into full flight! Daffodils are deceptively difficult; I think you should be encouraged because you've done great job of the shape and range of colours. Keep going - it's practice, practice, practice! Have a great Easter weekend :) Claire x
