a couple announcements and some thoughts
You may have noticed, if you're super observant, that the tabs up there at the top of my site have changed. Now there is a painting shop tab and a crafts shop tab and even a tab for pinterest. What? Basically...
1. I split my Etsy shop into 2 shops. One for my paintings and one for the other stuff which I'm calling crafts for lack of a better term (do you have a better one?). I've been going back and forth about this decision for a while and finally just went for it. Now that the paintings shop is up and running, I have to say that I personally love how my paintings look all by themselves. I still have work to do, but it's a good start. And I'm pretty proud of the quick banner I put together when I realized I had totally forgotten about how I'd need one.
Not to be bragging or anything. It just makes me happy that I can go into Photoshop and play around a bit without being entirely clueless. I hadn't ever thought that was possible.
2. Pinterest, oh Pinterest. You may remember I ditched it way back in 2012. I'm still not sure about it, but what finally tipped me over the edge is the fact that the main source of traffic to my Etsy shop is Pinterest. That has been the case for a while and it makes me curious. So I reactivated my account. I cleared out all my old pins and started some new boards. It does bother me that so many images on Pinterest don't link to the owner/originator of the image (I find that even people who should know better are guilty of this and it makes me sad and frustrated as I try to hunt down the originator of images that I am finding. There's the legality issue and common courtesy, but also there's the fact that for lots of the images I'd like to know more, learn more, and I can't if the photo doesn't link to where the image is actually from). It's been fun looking at pretty pictures and finding inspiration, but I keep thinking about what Holly Becker said in a post early this year about how it's great to get inspiration but that inspiration should lead to action (hmmmm, good excuse for going out and getting that next tattoo I've been dreaming about for years). So, I'm not sure how long this Pinterest thing is going to last, but I'm there for now and probably spending way too much time there.
In other news, spring seems to actually be arriving. The last of our snow piles have finally melted (though there is still snow out and about, but less each day). The birds have been so active and loud. The robins, especially, always make me smile. The frogs have started up out at the farm. We were there for Sunday dinner last night and heard them and then today when we went to drop something off for my parents they were at it again. I have also noticed that the light has been amazing in the evenings.

Then: I have a Pinterest account but don´t pin anything on it except my own work, just in case for all those legal terms that go over my head.
I do follow people though and even save bookmarks for things I want to know more of.
Congratulations on your two shops and coming to clarity on where your art is headed. Also I use Pinterest as a bookmarking spot for things that interest me. When I re-pin I try to connect the original art source but I'm not always successful at finding them. I get quite a lot of traffic from Pinterest so I use it to show my own works as well as follow the works of other artists I enjoy. I enjoy following the links back to artists that I would not have found on my own and peeking at art boards of people all over the globe.

It takes just a few extra seconds to find the original source and link appropriately--I'm always amazed when other artists don't take that extra step. ReplyDeleteI think it is good that your paintings have a platform all of their own. They look lovely displayed side by side. I had a pinterest account but deleted it as I was unsure about copyright etc. They also said you wasn't supposed to use it to promote your own work which I thought was a bit strange! I will have a look at your pinterest as we like similar things. Good luck with both of your shops Anne. :)
