in the garden

Suddenly everything is starting to happen in the garden. After waiting and waiting and waiting, spring is finally here. The strawberry roots I planted, that I never thought would amount to anything, are sprouting leaves.

The seeds I planted (which were pecked by birds, trampled by dogs and snowed on) are growing (if a bit slowly).

There are radishes, lettuce, spinach, arugula, peas. And I have planted out some of the babies that my mom and I grew from seeds under lights.

Kale, broccoli, cabbage, onions, leeks. So far I've built two out of the four raised beds that I'm planning for the back garden. Cinder blocks might not be the prettiest, but it's fun to plant things in the holes (so far, strawberry roots and pansies, soon nasturtiums).

One of the best things about spring is the return of color. I think that's what I missed most during the winter. Now there's the grass beginning to turn green, a haze of color in the trees. Pops of flower color and birds...

The orioles have returned! So fun to see orange in the treetops. And the goldfinches have suddenly turned from their winter drab to bright, bright yellow.

Color is everywhere.

And I'm loving it.
