the best laid plans -- making and doing

Hello.

paperwhites

How has your year been going so far? Can you believe that we're already over halfway through January? I look at my calendar and think, wait a minute... I haven't done ________ yet. You can fill in that blank with any number of things. That's not to say I haven't been doing things and making things and having a good start to the year if I sit down and look at it. BUT -- and there is a big but -- the year feels slippery, as if I don't yet have a good grip on it. Even with schedules and calendars and assignments and PLANS. Perhaps that's just the nature of the beast. We never have complete control over things, do we? Life races ahead. Sometimes I feel as if I could use a little time-out, but that's not the way things work, is it.

Today I was supposed to be telling you about all the wonderful progress I've made on the challenge I set for myself this month: making handmade books.

I'm guessing you can see where this is headed. Have I made any books this month? Nope. BUT (there's that word again) if I'm honest I'll admit that instead of choosing just one thing from my to-do list, I was carried away and have been trying to do multiple things all at once. I'm making and doing like crazy, but not in a focused way. So I guess therein lies my challenge. Gaining clarity and focus.

What about you? Have you challenged yourself to try anything new or to tackle something from your creative to-do list? How has it been going?

  1. Goodness I can see I have some catching up to do on your posts! That's a nice problem to have. :)
This year has been off to a wonky start already. I am counting the days until spring, as usual!

Hope the wonkiness starts to clear up soon! And I'm with you there, Spring can't come soon enough!

  2. I was listening to a podcast recently that discussed this. He addressed the fact that we all only have a limited amount of time in a day and that what is "great" for someone may not be for you. He also suggested just focusing on doing a few things, not saying yes to things we think we should say yes too but don't really want to. He touched on how everyone is always saying how busy they are and why. I really resonated with him and I'm keeping these things in mind regularly.

    1. So true. We all need to find our own way. Sometimes it's easy to get convinced that other people have the right answers and we need to follow that way of being, but you're right. We need to figure out what works for us. Everyone is different.

      Thanks for sharing, Dana.

  3. One thing that's been on my "to-do" list is to spend more time helping friends and connecting with my family. Not creative endeavors, but certainly meaningful things that give my life real purpose. This past week I've attended to that "to-do" and it's been very uplifting. xxx ~ Nancy

    1. That's a good thing to have on your to-do list. Emotionally creative, I'd say.

      Thanks for sharing, Nancy!
