30 Days 30 Paintings, Day 27 -- a Male Ruby Throated Hummingbird

When I started trying to figure out what to paint today, I felt like I was out of ideas. That's not exactly true. I had ideas, but nothing really grabbed me. I played through the ideas in my head, discarding one after the other.

Then I remembered the cosmos flowers opening up in the garden and decided to go cut one to paint. I stepped into the garden and a hummingbird buzzed by me. She flew to one of the sunflower stalks and landed for a rest. The spent sunflowers are one of her favorite places to perch these days. I stood watching her. The cosmos plants are just in front of and beside the sunflowers. I didn't want to walk over there and disturb her. What to do? She scratched her head and started preening. She launched into a hover only to land again on a different stem. More preening. She chased a tiny bug. I realized that I was no longer waiting for her to fly away. I was filled with joy watching her and was so grateful that I had that time in the quiet morning garden with her.

After that, what to paint was an obvious choice.

Although I rarely saw any males in the garden this summer, I wanted to paint one as a companion for the female I painted earlier this month.

I rather like them together. And I'm glad I listened to the universe this morning when it showed me what to paint.

    1. Oh, Simone, thank you!! It was fun. I've been sketching and painting hummingbirds a lot, sad to know that soon they'll be leaving for the year. I saw one this morning and each day I wonder if this will be the last.
