2x2: 2 Artists, 2 Sketchbooks -- Week 46

I have not been doing much painting lately and so when it came time to sit down and work on this one I threw out my original idea of doing a drawing with pens and filled the page, instead, with watercolor.

I'm not sure why I decided to do an abstract landscape for my page. Maybe it was the thought that the limited palette would work for it or maybe because I've had the desire to try some more landscapes ever since I created a couple last summer for one of my pages.

I think, also, I have spring on my mind with the warmer weather we've been having here. Snow's still on the ground but it's been melting, making me yearn for spring to arrive for real.

These colors make me think of a spring evening and although I love the patterns made by the sprinkle of salt on the drying paint, they look a bit too much like snow to me. I should have added them to the green half and they'd look like a meadow of flowers. Ah well. The page was fun to do and has me thinking of all sorts of other possibilities and that's really the point, isn't it?

Don't forget to check out Dana's blog for her take on this week's pages!

About the project:

2x2: 2 Artists, 2 Sketchbooks is a collaboration between artists Dana Barbieri and Anne Butera. Dana and Anne met in an online painting class. Although they have never met in person, they have become friends through regular visits to each others' blogs. It was through this connection that this project began. Wanting to move from friendship to collaboration, each spent two months filling one half of a sketchbook before mailing it off to the other. Dana worked on the lefthand pages and Anne on the right. Each will be responding to the other's work on the adjacent sketchbook pages over the coming year. Watch weekly as they reveal another page of their story.

About the artists:

Dana is an artist and crafter living in the foothills of the Catskill mountains two hours north of New York City with her husband, two children and little kitty. She is passionate about painting, knitting, crochet, color, pattern and design.

Anne is an artist, writer and crafter who finds inspiration and joy in the beauty of her garden and the magic of nature. Dissatisfied with and disheartened by the pace and lifestyle of the city, she and her husband (with their two rescued greyhounds and an aging Siamese) relocated to a small town in the beautiful Driftless region in southwest Wisconsin with the goal of living a slower, simpler, more intentional life.

  1. I really like both paintings. Anne - yours reminds me of an open field with a stream running to the left and trees in the background. The clouds in the pinky lavender sky look like cow parsley flower heads and not the snow you imagine. :-)

    1. Thanks, Simone. It was fun to do something so different (for me). I'd like to do some more. Abstract, loose, focused on color and texture. Cow parsley flower heads are much more appealing to me right now than snow. :)
